After slowly emerging from the haze that is pregnancy,
breast feeding and the raising of very small humans, I began to realize there
were some things missing from my life. As the sleep and adult
conversations with my spouse began to return, we started going out again,
sometimes even without kids. It didn't take long to realize that all of
this had led to one of the biggest missing things, alcohol.
I had been a
pretty good, occasional binge drinker, before deciding it was time to get
pregnant. It had probably been almost 10 years with only the occasional
glass of wine or champagne at celebrations, when I went back into a liquor
store and realized how much I had missed. All of the cool bottles,
beautiful colors and names containing "maple, bacon" and even "pomegranate" and "cotton candy" were summoning me. And I thought, "how am I
going to be able to try all of these things?" It was almost disappointing,
until a good friend brought something into my life that I thought was only for
airplanes and minibars, and we call them "Tiny Bottles!"
This friend and
mother had similar parenting experiences to mine and was looking for a way to bring these
new alcohol inventions into our lives. The ultimate purveyor of our dream was
Total Wine! They moved into Tucson and built a store that works on me
like casinos work on others. I can go in at 10am and walk out, and wonder
how could it have gotten dark outside so quickly. Her discovery of this
miraculous place gave us exactly what we were looking for, tiny enough bottles
that we could buy as many as we want, try literally sips of these
wonderful new flavors and not get overly drunk or go into so much debt that we
couldn't eventually put our tiny humans through college.
We got lucky enough to match our discovery of Total Wine, with a tradition we
had started calling Family Friday Film Frenzy. Once again, our tiny humans
caused us to have to come up with a way to enjoy our previously lavish Friday
nights. Who doesn't look forward to Friday, and after a long work week,
heading out to a nice dinner, maybe a couple of drinks and a violent or
slightly sexually explicit movie, shared with your spouse and good friends?
The answer is parents. Parents don't get to celebrate Fridays in the
traditional ways because our tiny humans don't want to sit quietly at a nice
restaurant that may take 3 hours to get your dinner. My husband and I
realized that if we wanted anything close to our beloved Fridays back, we
needed to change one big thing - the location. Bring the dinner, drinks
and movies into our house, and the kids can have the space they need to also
enjoy their Friday nights. While this was good, it became even better when we invited friends to join us. It has become entrenched into all of our
lives at this point. I look forward to Friday in a much bigger way than I
ever had before we had such amazing kids and wonderful friends.
This blog is our journey of the rediscovery of our adulthood through family,
friends and tiny bottles. Long live Two Drunk Moms!
Where did it all begin? At Bevmo actually. A couple of
parents decided to check out the new Bevmo in town and discovered what we now
refer to as “Tiny Bottles!”
Gone are the days of simply
purchasing a tiny bottle of vodka or whiskey to squirrel away to feed your
alcoholic habits. In fact, there are now so many bottles to choose from for
those of us out of the alcohol and bar scene since having kids, this is a great
way to become reinitiated in the fine art of cocktails.
I mean, check this out! http://www.tinybottlesofliquor.com/tiny-bottles-of-liquor
(Disclaimer: We do not condone alcoholism, drinking
underage, driving while drinking, drinking and texting, sneaking alcohol into places, carrying open intoxicants, or any of that other bad stuff. In fact, because we're nice and care about our readers, we may do some of the stuff above, so you don't have to!)
Where was I? Oh, yah... So, we bought a slew of Tiny Bottles! and enjoyed a little taste testing. Since then, more Tiny Bottles! have come on the scene and we have enjoyed those as well. Some of us have taken up crafting with an alcohol theme, while others have found the perfect television shows or movies to watch while drinking, while another searches endlessly for songs about alcohol. We've even managed a couple of date nights away from the kids. UNFORGETTABLE!
We've moved on since Bevmo, to Total Wine and even local grocery store liquor departments. Tiny Bottles! have become big bottles and various other friends have chipped in to stock our bar with liquor, mixers and other must-have accessories.
We hope you'll join us on this journey of discovery, no matter how absurd it may seem, and frankly will be, as we rediscover alcohol.
So, what is the point of all of this? Heck if we know. We
may or may not be having a beverage as we write this post. What we do know, is
that as responsible adults, yes-with children, we have also discovered the
wonderful outlet that a little weekly imbibing and close friendship has brought
We’ve been keeping track of our taste testing and even some
of our crazy concoctions. Enjoying what we fondly refer to as “Jiz” drinks,
various smoothies that turn out amazing, and others that end up just a little
too… lumpy to be enjoyable. We have tried more Tiny Bottles! than we’ve ever thought possible. We’ve also made the
mistake of enjoying a Tiny Bottle!,
only to purchase the large bottle and then realize that it is not as wonderful
as we remember it.
Because we think we are downright hilarious and brilliant
while drinking, and really no one should be having as much fun as we are; we
want to share—our reviews (aka: opinions), games, recipes, books, apps and
shows or movies we watch along with any other crap that we do or say on our
Fabulous Fridays as Two Drunk Moms.
